Boys & School

This last weekend was parents weekend at Taylor University. It was good to see the boys again and hear about what they are experiencing. It makes me wish I could be close by because there has been a shift in our relationship. The boys don't seem like boys anymore, there is more of a peer relationship developing where we share opinions and consider different view points. In earlier years they have mostly had to conform to my opinions, but now I think my opinion is being influenced by them.

School has a way of bringing this out in a person. Their new ideas and reasoning is now being backed up by perspective and truth. Another pleasing result is the exposure I am getting to new reading material I probably would have never given a glance. Last year I read "Blue Like Jazz" by Don Miller and a book by John Piper about being a christian hedonist. I am currently reading "Hearing God" by Dallas Willard. I am becoming more aware how vital the Bible is to us knowing the creator and the different ways we hear Him speak to us.

I wonder if there is ever a parent that doesn't regret not spending more time or not giving better advice. However, I am confident I have tried to give my best effort. I really like our new family picture, so much has changed in all of us. God is in the process of redeeming us all. I hope we can share it with you soon.

Tom, I appreciate what you shared about the change in relationship. I'm seeing it as well and still coming to terms with it. Its good to see our children grow and make good decisions but so very hard not to be needed in the same way. I think you're wise growing with them now in this new relationship.

One thing I've thought a lot about is how God gave us the family relationship to give us an earthly picture of what He wants our relationship with him to be. So many things took on a new look when Travis was born and I realized the kind of hurt I cause God when I sin. My love for Travis never diminished when he messed up and after the discipline, everything seemed so much better.

Thank you for sharing. I love you.
